In a world where the noise outside seems constant, full of stimuli designed to grab your attention, when was the last time you stopped to listen to what you really need? Therapy is not just for moments of crisis; it is an act of courage, an opportunity to pause and look inwards honestly. But amid so much noise, so much agitation, so many voices giving opinions and advice… how can you tell when it is the right time to go to therapy?
When your body and mind speak, listen to them!
Life is not always straightforward when something is wrong. The signs can be subtle or show up in unexpected ways. Perhaps your body has become a messenger that, through tiredness, aches and pains or insomnia, is trying to tell you something you cannot put into words.
Have you felt that a simple “I’m fine” is no longer enough to describe how you really feel?
Have you felt the contradiction of realising that, no matter how many times you repeat it, you don’t actually feel that everything is fine?
This disconnect between what you show and what you feel is a reminder that something needs attention.
Perhaps you have found yourself trapped in a cycle of repetitive thoughts that won’t let you move forward, or you have realised that certain events in your life have been harder than you imagined, that your relationships don’t make you feel as good as you would like, that you have insecurities, or perhaps you just feel that something isn’t right and you don’t even know what it is.
All these reasons – even those moments of uncertainty and the emptiness you feel inside without anything external having happened – are also an invitation to look for a space where you can explore what is going on, calmly and without judgement, and ask yourself: what do I need to feel well?
You don’t need to hit rock bottom
Taking the step towards therapy is not a sign that something is broken, but that you value your wellbeing enough to invest in it. Sometimes there doesn’t even need to be an obvious crisis to seek help; the simple wish to get to know yourself better and explore who you are is reason enough. Think of therapy as a space to explore your motivations and longings and to better understand what drives you in life. Put like that, it doesn’t sound bad at all, does it?
People don’t go to therapy just to find answers. They also go to discover questions they didn’t know they needed to ask, or how important those questions were. It is a window through which you can look at everything you already know – your relationships, your patterns and your desires – but from a different perspective and with fresh eyes.
Nobody doubts that you are a strong, intelligent person, capable of getting by… but that doesn’t mean you have to live with distress just because you can bear it. You don’t have to wait until you hit rock bottom to ask for help, nor do you have to face what worries you on your own.
Let go of prejudice and set yourself free
Some people still think that seeking help is a sign of weakness, but what could be stronger than looking at yourself in the mirror and deciding to change whatever is stopping you from being happy?
Breaking down the prejudices surrounding psychotherapy also means freeing yourself from the chains of “should” so that you can be who you really are and get what you truly need. No rules that work the same for everyone, no bars in the form of preconceived expectations and no one telling you how things ought to be. Overcoming these beliefs means opening the door to a new way of understanding, acting, feeling and living that is yours, at your own pace and in your own way, focusing on what really matters: that you are well.
Therapy is an act of rebellion against the noise of the outside world, a declaration that you deserve to be the priority in your own life. Therapy means opening the door to a space where you don’t need to justify your emotions to anyone, a space where you play the leading role and where you can simply be and grow.
When is the right time to go to therapy?
When you finally decide that enough is enough, and that prejudices and false myths will not stop you from prioritising what really matters.
If reading this stirs something inside you…
If something you have read stirs something in you, perhaps it is because you are hearing something resonate within you and call out: it’s time to look after yourself and make yourself a priority.
I won’t lie to you: therapy isn’t always easy.
There will be times when you feel great, others when you feel you are slipping back, you will face some really difficult things and, of course, there will also be moments of laughter and celebration. Every step will be a small move towards a version of you that feels freer, more complete and more at peace, with yourself and with those around you.
Asking for help is already a beginning. What’s more, if you are reading this article, congratulations, because you have already begun. Make this moment the start of something different. Don’t wait until you can’t take any more to give psychotherapy a chance. The decision to look after yourself can be today, right now, because you are worth it and because wellbeing is not a luxury: it is your right and it is what you deserve.
Do it for yourself and for the life you deserve to live.
If you are still wondering when the right time to go to therapy is… and you have read this far, it may very well be now.
