Couples therapy and sexuality 1

We are here for you

We build ourselves in relation to others, which is why it is vital that we know and look after ourselves within our relationships and, at the same time, that we are able to know and look after those with whom we form a bond. Knowing how to communicate within the couple, being able to set boundaries, enjoying a fulfilling sex life, being assertive, being able to empathise with the other person, making important decisions, respecting both the unit and each person’s individuality, changing unhelpful dynamics, and so on.

Whenever you need it, ask for help.

What we will work on

How we support you

Navigating the complexity of relationships

At Umera we offer a neutral space where couples can explore their dynamics, better understand their conflicts and gain a clearer understanding of themselves and their relationship.

Understand, accept and decide

Couples therapy at Umera facilitates a process of understanding and decision-making based on mutual respect, building lasting wellbeing for both of you.

Turning pain into a way forward

At Umera we support couples through painful times, helping them to turn that suffering into learning and growth, in a supportive, respectful environment where they can make conscious decisions.

Reconnecting with yourself within the relationship

In therapy we don’t only explore the relationship; we also help you reconnect with yourself, identify your needs and be honest about what you expect. At Umera we accompany you on this journey of self-discovery and conscious decisions as a couple.

What do we treat?

If you recognise yourself in any of these situations, ask for help.

If you struggle to find meaning in your day-to-day life, if you feel sad, tired or low most of the time, if you find it hard to find things that motivate or excite you, if you feel apathetic and have no desire to do anything, or if you find it hard to concentrate, have trouble sleeping or your mood keeps changing… ask for help.

If you feel that situations overwhelm you and you don’t know how to face them, if you feel a distress that stops you moving forward with your plans, if you feel irritable, tense and worried most of the time, if you experience fears and insecurities and feel you are losing control without being able to do anything about it, if even the smallest things feel overwhelming… ask for help.

If you can’t stop thinking without ever finding an answer, if there are worries that keep going round and round in your head and won’t let you live in peace, if you have catastrophic thoughts that make you anxious or you need to check things several times and still have doubts, if you have strange fears and compulsions, if you often repeat certain behaviours or rituals, if you need everything to be in order and symmetrical or if you need to have everything under control at all times… ask for help.

If you feel that a situation is overloading you, if you feel constantly wound up and find it hard to switch your mind off, if you feel despair and are irritable, if you are constantly tense and feel out of control or worried, if you have been through a significant experience (or a series of experiences) that you don’t know how to handle and feel that everything is piling up, if you feel that all this is affecting your personal and professional life… ask for help.

If you find it hard to understand interpersonal relationships and don’t know how to communicate appropriately with others, if you notice restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviour in yourself, if you have very specific and unusual interests that often occupy your mind, if you find it hard to understand your own emotions and those of others… ask for help.

If you find yourself tossing and turning in bed without managing to fall asleep, if you fall asleep but wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep, if you wake up every morning before the alarm goes off, if you can’t rest… ask for help.

If you feel embarrassed when you have to talk to someone you don’t know, if you worry about bothering others when you have something to say, if you always put others before yourself, if you feel insecure in front of an audience, if you notice you are isolating yourself from others, if you worry about what others will think of you, if you can’t control your reactions when you feel you are being watched… ask for help.

If you feel there are emotions that control you rather than the other way round, if you find it hard to get over significant events in your life that make you feel bad, if you struggle to identify how what happens around you makes you feel and don’t know how to act, if you have the feeling of carrying built-up anger or if you never allow yourself to be sad, angry or bored… ask for help.

If you find it hard to control your impulsiveness, if you often act without thinking and then realise it would have been better to do things differently, if you have outbursts of aggression or anger, if you feel hooked on gambling, technology, etc., and feel there is nothing you can do to avoid always falling into the same behaviours, if you feel you are losing control over yourself… ask for help.

If you worry about your health, if you have aches and pains, sometimes feel you can’t breathe properly, often feel exhausted or notice that your body has allergic-type reactions, if you feel a lump in your throat or your stomach in knots, if you often get headaches without knowing exactly why or feel dizzy and nauseous and doctors can’t find an explanation for everything that is happening to you… ask for help.

If a specific fear stops you doing things the way you would like, if you have fears that defy logic and reason, if you have uncontrollable, disproportionate reactions to situations that don’t affect other people in the same way, if you feel insecure when you are away from home or in open spaces, if you are always worried about your health and afraid of getting ill, if you don’t dare to speak to strangers or in front of an audience, if you are afraid… ask for help.

If you are going through a time of change in your life or feel that everything is always the same and you are stuck, if you find it hard to see where you are heading and to find your path, if you find it hard to know who you really are and what keeps you going, if you feel alone among people and feel lost… ask for help.

If you always follow the same repetitive patterns in the way you think, feel and behave, patterns that shape how you relate to others and how you live your life, if you realise you keep making the same mistakes, if you sometimes feel that you feel too much or, on the contrary, too little, if you notice you always need to have others very close, or always too far away… ask for help.

If you have been through a painful experience that still affects you today, if memories of situations you try to avoid often come back to you and cause you anxiety, if you have lived through a strange situation that you don’t quite know how to explain or make sense of… ask for help.

We answer your questions

The questions we are asked most often before starting.

When the same arguments keep repeating without getting anywhere, when it is hard to communicate or feel close, after a crisis such as infidelity, or when there are doubts about the future of the relationship. You don’t need to wait for things to reach breaking point: the sooner you seek help, the easier it is to change the dynamics.

It is quite common for one partner to have more doubts than the other. You can start with whoever wants to come and, later on, suggest that the other person joins in. It is also possible to work individually on how you experience the relationship.

The aim is for both of you to understand what is happening and make conscious, respectful decisions. Sometimes that means strengthening the relationship and sometimes it means supporting a separation in the healthiest way possible. The therapist doesn’t take sides.

Yes. Sexuality is part of life as a couple and is a topic that can be addressed completely naturally and respectfully, in a confidential space. Talking about it helps you understand each other’s desires, needs and difficulties.
